ākṣarā-praṇam vishayaṃ bhavati kavyam ākṣara-praṇam-vāmāsa-vāsudevāḥ-praṇamāvarapranasam-vīryaḥ ākṣarāḥ praṇāṃ vā vyāvadhare ākṣarā-praṇāṃ vā ātmam evaṃ ceti jñānam. The knowledge by whom, when the knowledge by which, the learned man attains to the liberation, is the knowledge of the accomplished truth, by the individual who is truth itself. Therefore, do not say that the knowledge by which the man of the meanly trained intellect, whether of the modern or of the ancient ones, attains to the freedom, is the knowledge of the accomplished truth. These kinds of words are manifestly false. With the modern ones, who understand the actual truth through the same means as the ancient ones, there is a difference only in the presentation of the truth. As the rishis said, he who by means of knowledge and the other senses, understands the actual truth, achieves emancipation. Let us now turn to the primary meaning of the term vyavaharika. It means one who uses certain instruments to ascertain the true position of himself or herself. The ancients meant by it one who is free from ignorance and liberated. The individual who is considered liberated by the ancients is described as a person who has attained freedom by means of the various means provided by knowledge. And, this freedom is the same as the knowledge of the accomplished truth. It is stated in the Sandhyopanishad: "The knowledge of the accomplished truth is the liberation, and the individual who attains to that liberation, is the same as the supreme seer." (The knowledge of the accomplished truth is the true knowledge). The Sandhyopanishad also says: "Whoever understands the actual truth, reaches the liberation, and that person is the same as the seer." As it is evident from the passage quoted above, the term "vyavaharika" (one who uses instruments) is used in two ways.
